Reliving the Joy of Childhood

Today is National Coloring Book Day, a day dedicated to the simple joy of filling blank pages with vibrant colors. For many of us, coloring in coloring books is a cherished childhood memory that evokes feelings of creativity, relaxation, and pure happiness. It’s a good way to “take a breath” to a nostalgic journey back to those carefree days when all we needed to create a masterpiece were a box of crayons and a coloring book.

A Rainbow of Memories

Do you remember the excitement of opening a brand-new coloring book? The crisp pages filled with outlines of animals, princesses, superheroes, and fantastical worlds waiting to be brought to life. Each page presented an opportunity to let our imaginations run wild. The smell of fresh crayons, the satisfaction of staying within the lines (or not!), and the sense of accomplishment upon completing a page – these are memories that many of us hold dear.

Blooming Artists

Coloring was more than just an activity; it was a way for us to express ourselves. We chose colors that reflected our moods and personalities, and we often invented stories about the characters we were coloring. The sky could be any color we wanted, and animals could have patterns only found in our dreams. We could even color outside the lines. This creative freedom is something we might miss as adults, caught up in the routines and responsibilities of daily life.

Crayon Therapy

What we didn't realize as children is that coloring has therapeutic benefits. It helps reduce stress and improves focus. It's no wonder that adult coloring books have become so popular in recent years. They offer a chance to slow down, disconnect from technology, and engage in a calming activity.

Sharing the Joy

National Coloring Book Day is the perfect opportunity to remember those happy moments. Whether you have children, grandchildren, or just a box of crayons and a coloring book for yourself, take some time today to color. Share this experience with loved ones and introduce the younger generation to the joy of coloring. It’s a wonderful way to bond and pass on a timeless tradition.

A Personal Reflection

As a Perry Hall portrait photographer specializing in children's portraits, I am constantly reminded of the beauty and innocence of childhood.  Photographing little ones as they explore the world around them, including their coloring books, is a delight. They start by splashing hues over the page in pure colorful abandon of the lines. The pride in their finished artwork begins the parents’ storage problem for years to come! It's too hard to toss out these little Picasso beginnings!
